While these two squads are evenly matched, we could not have two more different teams. Bill Belichick is a master schemer who makes his players fit into his system or be replaced, which he does better than possibly anyone in the history of the league. Pete Carroll is the epitome of a players' coach. He views his players as living, breathing humans and wants to bring out the best in all of them in order to utilize their unique skills.
Tom Brady vs. Russell Wilson is a matchup of the old ushering in the new. This very well could be Brady's final trip to a Super Bowl, but I would be surprised if we did not see Wilson numerous more times in the big game. While Wilson might be looked at as the athletic "running quarterback," even Brady has to be humbled by Wilson's football IQ and moxie in critical situations.
Many will view this game as an offensive team vs. a defensive team, but both the Pats and Seahawks are capable of being dominant on either side of the ball. They both can beat you in so many ways it would be a fools errand to try to guess how this one will turn out. That being said, the SOBs are going to give it a shot!
Austen's Eight-Point Pick
Seattle over New England
Austen: Well I've been on the Seahawks' bandwagon since the end of Russell Wilson's rookie year, so I'm not hopping off now. This is the most complete team in the NFL and they are coming off one of the most impressive and astonishing playoff wins I have ever seen, even if they did require quite a bit of luck to pull it off. That is the type of win that gives you the confidence to keep fighting no matter what happens in this Super Bowl. Pete Carroll is the best in the world at getting his players up for a big game and keeping their confidence up.
That being said, Rob Gronkowski has the potential to totally wreck this injury plagued Seattle secondary. Their three best players on defense (Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor) are all dealing with legit injuries. This defensive group is known for their big hits, but Gronk, both in the pass game and in the run game, can hit them right back. Throw in the fact that LeGarrette Blount (aka the biggest running back in football) is hotter than ever and we should have some insanely big hits while the Pats' offense is on the field.
Tom Brady is as good as anyone in the clutch, but despite his great second half of the regular season, he is not the quarterback he used to be. He has a very similar skill set as Peyton Manning last season, and we all know how the Broncos' quick, short passing game worked against this defense. I think this will be a very close game, but it will be the Patriots inability to make a big play on offense that costs them the game, much like what cost the Packers two weeks ago.

Stally: Hold on just a minute, I need to search the room for pieces of my brain. It exploded after Austen called the Seahawks five-turnover win against the Packers "impressive." That's one of the worst playoff games I've ever seen a team play and still manage to luck its way into a win. If they played that way against New England, they would have been down about 31-0 by halftime. The word "impressive" should only be used with the superlative "least" in front of it.
I'm glad to hear Austen trying the justify why the Seahawks will win despite any real substantial argument. He did the same thing in the AFC Championship for the Colts, who lost 45-7 to New England. And, he did the same against Baltimore in the AFC Divisional Round. He also picked against the Patriots in any of their tough AFC games during the year (Cincinnati, Denver and Indy) and they won all of those games by at least 22 points.
I agree that the Seahawks are better than the rest. That's why Seattle made it this far. But, that team looked absolutely horrible against the Packers, and that's not overly surprising for an offense that ranked 27th in passing this season.
The key for the Patriots that will be scoring early and forcing the Seahawks to play from behind, something that Russell Wilson and his passing attack is not designed to do. Seattle has the league's best rushing attack, but if it faces a deficit, that neutralizes the ability to eat clock with the run.
Taking a big lead has been the recipe all season for the Pats. Eight of their 14 wins have come by at least three touchdowns, because they get a lead, force the other team to get one dimensional in throwing at their shutdown secondary, and continue to pile up points.
If Seattle's defense can keep New England off the board in the first half, it will have a chance to run its game (literally) in the second half. However, as I mentioned, New England would have blown out Seattle two weeks ago if that had been the Pats instead of the Pack, and they have the capability to run up the score against anyone, even the league's best defense.
