Week 4: The Gimpy Quarterbacks

With no Andrew Luck, Stally still has the Colts
trampling the Jaguars in Indianapolis.
I simply cannot remember the last time there were so many injured quarterbacks to start out the year. Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, Josh McCown, and now Andrew Luck will all have missed games due to injury in the first quarter of the season. That is crazy.

With so many injuries, it is hard to predict what will actually happen in these matchup but here we go!

Stally's Eight-Point Pick
@Indianapolis over Jacksonville

Stally: The Colts are at home.  The Jags are terrible.  This is a blowout waiting to happen.

Austen: Andrew Luck is out. Matt Hasselbeck is in. That is no bueno. Stally will regret this one when the Jags knock off the Colts..... maybe.

Austen's Eight-Point Pick
Green Bay over @San Francisco

Austen: Did anyone watch Colin Kaepernick last week? It was one of the worst quarterback performances of all time. That will not change trying to play catchup against an improved Green Bay defense. Did I mention that Aaron Rodgers is good?

Stally: I don't know if I agree with taking a road team this high, but especially since San Francisco only gave up three points in its only home game.  But, I can't disagree that the Packers are a clear favorite.

Stally's Seven-Point Pick
@Arizona over St. Louis

Stally: Arizona is destroying teams right now.  That team is very well-rounded and should manhandle the Rams in the desert.

Austen: This feels like a blowout. The Rams are terrible away from home. I think its been like two years since Carson Palmer has lost a football game. All things are coming up roses for the Cardinals.

Austen's Seven-Point Pick
@Atlanta over Houston

Austen: Arian Foster looks to be back, but no one expects him to get his usual load right out of the gate. The Falcons are playing their best all around football since they were the crown of the NFC (God that feels so long ago). Hard to count on the Texans on the road with the worst starting quarterback in the league (not including Jimmy Clausen).

Stally: After taking a year off, the Falcons are back to being the class of the NFC South (which really isn't too hard to do).

Stally's Six-Point Pick
@San Diego over Cleveland

Stally: It's not that San Diego is that good, it's that Cleveland is that bad.  Still not "the year" for the Browns ...

Austen: Can't argue with Stally here. The Browns look like the same Browns that tanked their season after a good start last season. They simply do not do anything very well and lack any sort of identity. Do not be surprised if there is a new coaching staff in Cleveland next season. Their loyalty to Josh McCown is perplexing.

Austen's Six-Point Pick
@Seattle over Detroit

Austen: Kam Chancellor is back. That makes all the difference in the world to this team. Russell Wilson does not lose a lot of home games. Matthew Stafford is 0-17 on the road against teams that finish the season with winning records. You would think he would accidentally win one. Not feeling it this week.

Stally: I have this pick here as well.  It's very hard to go against Seattle at home.

Stally's Five-Point Pick
@Cincinnati over Kansas City

Stally: Due to fantasy football implications, I've been cheering hard for the Chiefs the past few weeks.  It hasn't been enjoyable.  They stink!

Austen: Andy Dalton is playing incredible football right now. He is winning games for his team, instead of the other way around. The Bengals will stay undefeated another week.

Austen's Five-Point Pick
@Denver over Minnesota

Austen: No defense has been more impressive than the Broncos squad. They are winning despite Peyton Manning. Teddy Bridgewater has been one of the most disappointing quarterbacks in the NFL so far this year. He is going to get eaten alive, and that is why the Broncos will win.

Stally: I don't think there's that big of a difference in talent between these two teams, and the Vikings clearly have an advantage to control to the clock with a superior running game.  I have them with the upset on the road.

Stally's Four-Point Pick
@Buffalo over New York Giants

Stally: Sure, they can't beat New England, but they never can.  Aside from that, the Bills are shaping up to be a pretty good team, which isn't something anyone says about the Giants.

Austen: I cannot believe this is all the way down at our four point picks. The Bills should win by double digit points, even without LeSean McCoy.

Austen's Four-Point Pick
Carolina over @Tampa Bay

Austen: The Panthers may be the worst 3-0 team in the league, but the Bucs are still one of the worst teams in the entire league. It concerns me that Luke Kuechly and Josh Norman (the best defensive player that no one knows about who just won defensive player of the month) will both be out for this game, but that defense has enough talent to shut down a weak Bucs team.

Stally: It surprised me to find out that Carolina is 3-0.  It doesn't seem like the Panthers have played that well, but they're winning games, and Tampa Bay is not.  Good pick by Austen.

Stally's Three-Point Pick
@Pittsburgh over Baltimore

Stally: I had figured that the product of the whole would be stronger than the power of the individual. Meaning that I thought the Steelers were good enough as a team to beat the Ravens without Big Ben. That proved to not be the case, because apparently, the Steelers, an team in the National Football League, don't possess a kicker worth giving a game-winning attempt to from 50 yards out.

Austen: I had the Ravens, but counted them out of this game in the fourth quarter. The Steelers gave this game away. They had at least four or five opportunities to seal this game, but failed every time. This was an all around pathetic game for the Steelers.

Austen's Three-Point Pick
Philadelphia over @Washington

Austen: The Eagles figured out their run game last week, don't give the ball to DeMarco Murray. Ryan Matthews and Darren Sproles were very effective with Murray out, and despite being biased due to fantasy implications, they should keep Matthews in the starting lineup up until Murray proves his worth. On the other hand, the Redskins look awful against the Giants, who Stally just referred to as not a good team.

Stally: I'm going to take the Redskins in this one.  They've had more time to rest after a Thursday game last week, and should put up a fight at home.

Stally's Two-Point Pick
Oakland over @Chicago

Stally: Yes, actually, it has gotten this bad for the Bears, who have lost the last two games by a combined 51 points.  I know it's turning into ancient history, but they never should have fired Lovie Smith!

Austen: The Bears are already in rebuilding mode, as they started trading their players away for picks. That's how little faith this front office has in this team. No reason for anyone outside the team to have faith in them, even at home against the Raiders. Also, the Raiders are a young team on the rise.

Austen's Two-Point Pick
Dallas over @New Orleans

Austen: When I picked this game I assumed Drew Brees was still out. His return makes me question my pick, but truthfully, Luke McCown played better last week than Brees has so far this year. Not a lot to like about the Saints right now.

Stally: Drew Brees is back.  Brandon Weeden is not good.  This game is in New Orleans.  The Saints will win.

Stally's One-Point Pick
Miami over New York Jets (in London)

Stally: The Dolphins have struggled badly, but I still think they have more talent than the Jets.  This game should be a benchmark of these two teams, especially on a neutral field.

Austen: I'm sticking with my Jets for the same reason I took Buffalo last week. The Jets have played good football this season, while the Dolphins have played so poorly they are talking about a midseason coaching change already. The Dolphins are one loss away from being a total dumpster fire. I think the Jets sink them.
